Media Temple currently offers 4 main types of hosting solutions. Within these 4 hosting options are a range of more specific packages depending on the specific needs of the client. The 4 categories of hosting are:
Shared Hosting – In 2006, Media Temple launched The Grid – a pioneering cloud system which has become one of the foundations on which the company has grown. The Grid is a series of interconnected servers which are constantly working together. In this way, customers are not only relying on one shared server, but on a system of servers that adapt their supply depending on your demands at any given time. With Grid hosted packages, customers can avail of 1TB of bandwidth per month, 100GB of storage and 24/7 customer and technical support.
Premium WordPress Hosting – An upgrade of sorts on the standard Grid hosting, the Premium WordPress Hosting service was launched in 2014 and is aimed at users looking for a specific hosting solution for their WordPress sites. Customers can install WordPress on standard shared hosting, but the WordPress Hosting package has been designed so that everything is easier to use. The product was launched with web developers and designers in mind, and includes unlimited bandwidth and the facility for one click staging.
VPS Hosting – Media Temple VPS hosting plans come with an uptime guarantee of 99.999%, and offer users three different types of packages. Self-Managed VPS plans are aimed at those looking to build their site from the ground up, and they provide root access to the server. Managed VPS plans give users access to an intuitive control panel, with root access available on request. A fully managed VPS plan is also available – customers leave all the setup and control to the pros.
Dedicated Server – Similar to the VPS Hosting options, the Dedicated Server option is available for those that need the absolute best in power and performance. These packages include 10TB of monthly bandwidth, 1TB of all-SSD storage and 128GB of buffered DDR3 Ram. Again, like the VPS Hosting, customers can choose between self-managed, managed or fully managed dedicated server packages. Customers on Media Temple dedicated servers include Diesel and Steve Madden.
Uptime & Performance
Media Temple offers a 20/20 uptime guarantee on its DV products. DV products include any of its VPS hosting packages and its dedicated server packages. This means that Media Temple will guarantee an uptime of 99.999% on any of these packages. If this guarantee is not met, the customer can claim back 20% of their monthly hosting fee for every 20 minutes of downtime experienced. This is an excellent guarantee, and one that shows confidence in their performance. Reports of issues for customers with DV products are few and far between.
However, no such guarantee exists for packages hosted on The Grid. This includes standard shared hosting and the Premium WordPress Hosting package. Media Temple’s shared hosting packages are not the cheapest – far from it, and so it is somewhat disappointing that they do not offer any kind of uptime or performance guarantees. That being said, most testing statistics show that the Grid does average uptime of around 99.9%, and it is certainly one of the faster services available.
Shared hosting is always going to pose problems. The way Media Temple’s Grid is set up differs to other hosting companies. As all the servers are working together, the failing of one server should not cause your website to go down, as other servers will pick up the slack. However, as with any shared hosting service, a huge spike in demand across the network can cause problems, as there simply isn’t enough power to meet the surge. This is a problem for any shared hosting service.
With Media Temple, the surge has to be network wide, as the structure of the Grid will facilitate localized spike in traffic surges without affecting other users. In this regard, Media Temple has set themselves apart from many competitors.
Help & Support
Media Temple uses their customer service record as a hard selling point, and it’s not difficult to see why. They offer 24/7 customer support through live chats, support requests, calls and tweets, and have an extensive KnowledgeBase self-help facility and chat forums where users and staff discuss various issues.
In 2014, Media Temple won four Stevie Awards. The Stevie Awards are annual international business awards that are given to companies that achieve excellence in aspects of their business.
Media Temple took home a Gold Stevie Award for its CloudTech Premium Support team, as well as being recognized with three Silver Stevie Awards in the categories of Contact Center of the Year (Up To 100 Seats) – Technology Industries; Customer Service Management Team of the Year – All Other Industries, and Customer Service Department of the Year – Computer Hardware & Computer Services.
About Media Temple
Did you know that Media Temple was founded in 1998 and has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies in North America and one of the best places to work in Los Angeles. MT powers 1.5 million websites in 100 different countries. (mt) was bought by GoDaddy in October 2013. Although this caused initial concern for some, Media Temple has retained its autonomy. It is run independently from GoDaddy, and the purchase contract stipulated that this will not change. This deal has allowed Media Temple to continue to expand its growth, and it is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Media Temple Review Summary
So, is Media Temple any good?
The GOOD: Tailored for WordPress. Good uptime and response time. Anytime customer support. Secure.
The NOT-SO-GOOD: More expensive than traditional shared hosting.
Media Temple is one of the first names on many people’s lips when asked to recommend a professional web hosting company, and that is in no small part due to Media Temple’s commitment to endearing itself to the professional eCommerce community. They have done this through exceptional service, excellent performance and building trust with clients.
That being said – they are not for everyone. Clients looking to set up a simple blog or WordPress site that isn’t going to be receiving big numbers of traffic quite simply don’t need Media Temple. Their prices are reflective of the type of customer they are targeting. Someone looking to set up their first website or a basic blog can find cheaper hosting elsewhere. For these customers, hosting with Media Temple would be like bringing a machine gun to a fist fight. It’s just not necessary.
However, experienced online business people, web designers and business owners should take a good look at Media Temple. It offers excellent server stability, and facilitates scaled hosting depending on demand. Its customer service is literally award winning, and it currently offers hosting solutions to some of the most recognizable high street brands. If reliability, excellent customer service and industry leading performance are things that your business needs, then Media Temple could be the web host for you.
